Almost more registrations than inhabitants: North Sea island flooded with registrations for lighthouse keepers

The lighthouse on the North Sea island of Wangerooge is looking for a new keeper.

A state of emergency applies in the town hall on the island of Wangerooge in the German North Sea. At the end of February, the island reported an unusual situation: it was looking for a new lighthouse keeper. Roaring waves, cold winds and night storms: According to Rieka Beewen, general representative of the mayor of Wangerooge, this sounded like a dream job for almost 1,100 people. The strange thing is that there are almost as many applications as the island has inhabitants.

The northern German holiday paradise has just over 1,200 inhabitants, writes the “Spiegel”. So very few people work in the administration: only about ten people work at the town hall, and a single woman takes care of the staff work. According to Beewen, she is now getting some support; the work cannot be done alone. Wangerooge not only received applications from Germany; Media reports also made people from the Czech Republic and Poland aware of the position.

Someone must be present

Not all requests are serious, but the majority are certainly serious. But the work is not what you imagine: there have been no traditional lighthouse keepers on the island since the late 1990s – the former ship landmark has been out of use since 1969. It is now used as a tourist attraction. That’s what the new guard’s job will be about: selling souvenirs and tickets and controlling the entrances.

Because the municipality wants to process all applications, the planned start of work in early May will probably not take place. However, Beewen and the administration are positive that they can fill the position: “Out of 1,100 applicants, there should be the right person for us,” she said, “I strongly believe that.” They also hope that people will apply for other vacancies on the island. Like many North Sea islands, they are also experiencing a staff shortage and the tourist season will start again in a few weeks. “We currently have a gap in children’s entertainment and we are 14 days before Easter.”

It will probably become clear in some time who will be the new manager of the almost 40 meter high, monumental tower. (Unpleasant)
