On Thursday, a French delegation in Bern presented French President Emmanuel Macron’s program to expand nuclear energy. She was invited by the Swiss Nuclear Forum.
The French ambassador in Bern, Marion Paradas, emphasized at the conference that Switzerland imports a significant amount of nuclear energy produced in France.
In February 2022, the French president announced the construction of six new nuclear power plants by 2050. In addition to these six planned power plants, the construction of another eight is being considered.
Laurent Kueny of the French Ministry for Energy Transition and Marie-Agnès Berche of the French electricity company EDF outlined the contours of this expansion project in Bern.
The event took place a day after the Council of States adopted a postulate intended to restart the debate on new nuclear power plants in Switzerland. The federal government’s Energy Strategy 2050 provides for a gradual phasing out of this type of electricity. (sda/lyn)
