Seized by Russians: Yacht maintenance costs US 1 million per month

The “Amadea” is a superyacht in a class of its own: over 100 meters long and worth approximately $230 million. The furnishings leave nothing to be desired; Fine marble was even used for the bathrooms. However, currently no one is sailing the luxury yacht across the oceans; it has been in the custody of US authorities since 2022.

The FBI seized the “Amadea” in Fiji in 2022 as it was attributed to Putin confidant Suleiman Kerimov and the US implemented sanctions against Russia. But a superyacht cannot so easily remain hidden in the harbour. The maintenance of the enormous ship amounts to a whopping $1 million – per month!

The American authorities now want to make money from the yacht

This includes $360,000 for crew wages, $75,000 for fuel, $165,000 for maintenance, waste disposal, food and other expenses. In addition to this $600,000, there are also $144,000 in insurance costs and a monthly fee of $178,000 for dry dock space in San Diego. A total of $922,000 that the American authorities must pay out every month.

The US authorities have now petitioned the court for permission to sell the “Amadea”. The US Marshall Service wrote in its filing: “It is excessive to impose these costs on taxpayers when they could be reduced to zero through a sale.”

However, according to Spiegel, another oligarch has now come forward to claim ownership of the yacht: Eduard Khudainatov, former head of Russian oil producer Rosneft, is not on the sanctions list and wants to stop the sale. However, he is suspected of acting as a frontman for owner Kerimov. (neo)
