Because no country wanted to help: according to the rescue organization, 17-year-old dies in the Mediterranean in an explosion and fire at a Russian power plant – the cause is still unclear

A 17-year-old refugee from Africa died on a rescue ship in the Mediterranean despite calls for urgent medical attention, according to aid group Sea-Watch.

The boy was rescued from an overcrowded wooden boat along with about fifty other migrants in international waters, but then suffered cardiac arrest on board the “Sea-Watch 5”, the organization said on Wednesday evening.

Doctors on board were able to resuscitate him. However, all requests for an urgent evacuation were rejected by authorities in several countries, resulting in his eventual death after two hours.

According to Sea-Watch, help was requested from authorities in Italy, Malta and Tunisia. There was initially no official statement about the allegations. Four other migrants were in critical condition on board the ship, the aid agency said in the evening.

According to other passengers, they were exposed to gasoline fumes below deck for hours and did not have enough oxygen. People repeatedly die in the Mediterranean on their way from Africa to Europe on boats that are often barely seaworthy. (sda/dpa)
