Thousands of Polish farmers protested in Warsaw on Wednesday against EU regulations and imports from Ukraine. The demonstrators gathered in front of the office of Prime Minister Donald Tusk (66) and fired rockets, made smoke bombs and lit fires. Other protest participants blocked roads in Warsaw and other parts of the country with their tractors.
Polish farmers have been protesting for weeks against EU environmental rules, which they criticize as too restrictive, and against cheap imports from Ukraine. They also block border crossings with Germany and Ukraine.
“I want to produce healthy food, but we import products that are of lower quality than ours and with which we cannot compete on price,” protester Jan Kepa told AFP news agency in Warsaw. “We still have hope, but we have been protesting for more than a month and so far no satisfactory solution has been found for us.”
Last week, Tusk did not rule out a temporary closure of the border with Ukraine. Poland is one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine in Europe, but the grain import dispute has been straining Polish-Ukrainian relations for months. (AFP)
