This is not the first time Trump has made harsh statements against immigrants.

The rhetoric of Donald Trump (77) in the 2024 election campaign is sharp. The former American president regularly targets certain population groups. Now Trump caused another scandal: he shocked the American public with a statement against migrants.

In an interview with the right-wing conservative Right Side Broadcasting Network, the leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination spoke in detail about the current primaries. According to NBC News, Trump did not shy away from using drastic measures against immigrants: “These are bad people, they often come straight from prison or from mental institutions, from the insane asylum,” Trump said about those immigrants who enter the US illegally. . “You know, mentally disturbed people, that Silence of the Lambs thing.”

Comparison with serial killers

Trump then makes a crazy comparison to a movie psychopath: “Hannibal Lecter, does anyone here know Hannibal Lecter?” he added, as the audience laughed. In the 1991 film ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, the British Anthony Hopkins (86) plays the main character Hannibal Lecter. The serial killer imprisons, tortures, kills and eats his victims. “We don’t want these people in our country.”

This is not the first time Trump has made such a comparison. He had already made a similar statement regarding immigrants at a conference of ultra-conservative Republicans.

Experts view Trump’s rhetoric with great concern. They fear increasing radicalization among the Republican electorate. Law professor Timothy J. Heaphy assessed Trump’s language to the New York Times: “This kind of rhetoric is not without consequences.”

Heaphy warns that verbal violence is increasingly turning into actual violence. This would also be evident from the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters attacked the US Congress. “People we interviewed as part of the Jan. 6 investigation told us they went to the Capitol because politicians and the president told them to.” (An)
