Protests against the mullahs’ regime have been going on for weeks in southeastern Iran’s city of Sahedan. According to the Tasnim news agency, two members of the Revolutionary Guard were shot dead by unknown assailants. The Iranian media describes the deaths of the two as a “martyr’s death”. The victims were found to belong to the “Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution” (IRGC). Their main task is to fight opposing political groups in the country. America, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia classify the organization as a terrorist.
Violent clashes between civilians and security forces have been raging for weeks in the Sahedan region, near the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Dozens of people have already died. The state media spoke of unrest by ‘extremists’ at the police stations.
Controversy over beliefs
Sahedan is one of the few majority Sunni Muslim cities in Iran, which is dominated by followers of the Shia branch of Islam. In the impoverished province of Sistan-Balochistan, there are frequent clashes between the Baloch minority and Sunnis. That is why the death of the two men has been called martyrdom by the Iranian media.
Now they are looking for the killers of the two shots. Tasnim said the investigation was ongoing. Rumors are circulating on social media that the two men and the Revolutionary Guard were also responsible for delivering drones to Russia. That writes, for example, the Belarusian opposition medium “Nexta”. Whether the rumors are true cannot be confirmed at this time. (AFP/jwg)
