Fifteen dead in attack on shrine in Iranian city of Shiraz

At least 15 people have been killed in an attack on a shrine in Iran, national media reports. Three gunmen opened fire on pilgrims at Shah Cheragh’s mausoleum in Shiraz city. Dozens of people were injured.

State media reports that the attackers are from abroad. Two of them are said to have been arrested, and the third is still being sought. According to local officials, these are members of Sunni armed groups who are more likely to target Shia mosques and shrines.

The Shah Tseragh is one of the most famous buildings in Iran. The attackers entered the pilgrimage site in the late afternoon and opened fire on staff and visitors. The dead are said to be a woman and two children.

The last time Shiraz was hit by an attack was in 2008, when a bomb blast at a mosque killed 14 people, according to Al Jazeera.
