The reason: Authorities say mild winters have caused the bears to shorten or skip hibernation altogether. This leads to a higher bear population in Southeastern Europe. Similar problems were also reported in neighboring Greece, where farming groups said crops and beehives were damaged.
Just in April, a fatal bear attack occurred in northern Italy. An Italian man was jogging through the forest when the bear attacked him. In 2023, bears were repeatedly sighted in the mountainous and forested area, just under an hour’s drive from the provincial and regional capital Trento.
