This patient was in shock after waking from anesthesia. His greatest dream was taken away from him.

He went to the hospital to feel better. But his stay in the clinic turned into a nightmare. Spaniard Jorge B.* (41) wanted to undergo gallbladder surgery in the Spanish city of Córdoba, but the doctors made a serious mistake. Instead of the planned procedure, they performed a vasectomy, i.e. sterilization.

“I am sad and powerless because what they have done cannot be undone,” B. told the newspaper “El Doce”. “There is no way back.” The now barren man could not describe what was going through his mind; there were thousands of questions. “How could they make such a big mistake?” asks the Spaniard. “The word gallbladder was written all over my file, they just had to read it.” B. What is particularly disturbing is that no one is taking responsibility. “They blame each other.”

Error due to delay?

The reason for the serious failure was apparently a postponement of the date. The Spaniard’s surgery date was originally scheduled for last Tuesday, reports the Spanish newspaper “La Nacion”. However, the surgeons quickly postponed the appointment until the next day. According to the victim’s lawyer, this may have been the reason for the mistake.

After the incident, the hospital simply stated that the problem arose because gallbladder surgeries were not performed on Wednesdays. “He fell into the vasectomy pile and without asking him or doing anything else, they took him to the operating room,” the lawyer said.

Doctors consoled him with the possibility of artificial insemination

During a vasectomy, the vas deferens is exposed through small incisions in the skin or a small opening in the scrotum and removed over a length of 1 to 2 cm. The procedure leads to infertility.

By tying him up, the doctors took away B.’s greatest wish, as he says. Although B. is already the father of two boys, his biggest dream was a daughter. Unbelievable: After the operation, the doctors comforted him by saying that B. could still have children through artificial insemination.

According to specialists, the chance of reversal of the ligament when repeating the procedure is quite small. The Spanish Ministry of Health has now opened an investigation into the hospital. (An)
