With the Pentagon leaks, military member and gamer Jack Teixeira (22) caused the largest data breach of the past decade. He published important documents from the US Department of Defense on social media. The young man pleaded guilty during his hearing on Monday to all six charges filed against him under the Espionage Act.
He had previously pleaded not guilty to six charges of intentionally retaining and disclosing classified information relating to national defense. In a court filing last week, however, prosecutors in Boston requested a so-called Rule 11 hearing — a proceeding in which a change in the guilty plea is discussed. Teixeira has been in custody since his arrest in April 2023.
Teixeira has also agreed to attend a debriefing with members of the intelligence community and the Defense Department, court documents show, and to turn over any relevant documents whose location he has or knows of.
In return, prosecutors have said they will ask a judge to impose a prison sentence of 200 months or more than 16 years. If Teixeira had not pleaded guilty, he would have faced 30 years in prison. (An)
