The four Dutchmen who are said to have planned to kidnap a Belgian minister will be handed over to Belgium within ten days. There they will be interrogated. If a case arises, the International Chamber of Legal Aid in Amsterdam has decided that they can serve their possible sentence in the Netherlands.
The men were arrested at the end of September at the request of Belgian police in The Hague and Leidschendam. The arrests followed the discovery of a car with firearms at the home of Belgian Justice Minister Van Quickenborne.
Van Quickenborne himself reported in a video message that the arrests had thwarted a kidnapping attempt. He was placed under heightened security.
The suspects deny trying to kidnap the minister, says reporter Philip Heymans of VRT NWS. “One of the three, a young man in his 20s, told the judge he just wanted to go out,” he says.
“The second said he had been asked via social media to bring a car to Belgium for 500 euros. The third said he was asked to drive to bring this car to Belgium.”
