Major Supreme Court decision: Donald Trump should not be barred from primaries

Former US President Donald Trump may participate in his party’s presidential elections, according to the US Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the removal of his name from the ballot in the US state of Colorado was unlawful. After the Supreme Court ruling, Donald Trump responded to the verdict on his own social media platform ‘Truth Social’: “This is a great victory for America,” he wrote.

The court’s decision is a major success for Trump — but not a surprise. During a hearing in early February it was already indicated that the nine judges would rule in his favor.

The Supreme Court has provided clarity

For many experts, the Supreme Court’s ruling had a historical dimension even before the actual ruling, because the judge’s ruling has a direct influence on the course of the presidential elections. The decision was made just before the so-called ‘Super Tuesday’ – the court thus provided clarity before the important election day. On Tuesday, Republicans and Democrats will hold party primaries in more than a dozen states, including Colorado.

The Supreme Court has accepted Trump’s appeal against another court’s decision. Trump was effectively barred from the Colorado primary for his role in the storming of the Capitol in January 2021. The backdrop to the dispute is the unprecedented attack on the US House of Representatives almost exactly three years ago.
