Holidays are becoming increasingly expensive. Not only because of the increased prices, but also because islands are now issuing fines for shells and stones. Greece, for example, is cracking down on tourists who take a souvenir from nature.
The Greek island of Skiathos is known for its picturesque Lalaria beach. Anyone who picks up a shell or stone on the beach now risks a fine of up to 1,000 euros, the newspaper ‘Heute’ reports.
A box was placed at the airport saying ‘Take photos, not pebbles’. However, the warning has so far not resulted in a reduction in the number of stone and grenade thieves.
Italy is also taking action against tourists who buy souvenirs on the beach instead of in the shops. Taking sand, stones and shells is prohibited throughout the country. There is also a risk of fines, especially high in Sardinia, where tourists receive fines of up to 3,000 euros.
However, there are also countries where shells and stones can still be taken home. In Germany, France, Portugal and Spain it is generally allowed to collect shells. There are only bans in certain places; these are often marked with signs. (obf)
