Four Belgian teenagers are said to have exchanged text messages about a possible jihadist attack. The three minors in their “late teens” and a young man aged 18 were arrested on Sunday in Brussels, Ninove, Charleroi and Liège.
This was said by the spokesperson of the Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, Eric Van Der Sypt. No weapons or explosives were found during the raids. The police have confiscated phones and laptops.
The messages that the young people exchanged on the internet about an allegedly planned attack were “worrying enough” to intervene, Van Der Sypt explains. “It’s not like they had anything planned for tomorrow, but it was acute enough to require intervention.”
The young age of the suspects also worried the authorities. “They are very flexible. For example, if you give them a gun, things can happen very quickly. “So we don’t want to take any risks,” said the spokesperson. After questioning by police, a judge must decide on Sunday or Monday how to proceed. (SDA)
