A seven-year-old girl died when a refugee boat capsized in northern France.
A total of 16 migrants left by boat on Sunday morning from a canal in the hinterland of Calais to reach the English Channel to travel to Britain, the newspaper “La Voix du Nord” reported, citing the police prefecture. The girl was on the boat with her parents and three siblings. Her family survived the accident just like the other migrants. They were cared for in a gym and provided with dry clothing. Police questioned the adults and opened an investigation.
For a long time, many migrants from the northern French coast crossed the English Channel to Great Britain in rubber boats. Migrants die repeatedly during crossings organized by smugglers. Just last week, one person died and two people went missing in the floods. France is also combating unwanted migration by the British government with financial support from London. The fact that migrants are now leaving for waters in the hinterland of the English Channel could be related to this increased surveillance of the coast, police report. (sda/dpa)
