The Persian-language branch of Deutsche Welle (DW) is mentioned on Wednesday in the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Members of the European Parliament and two German companies are also affected. About a week ago, Iran put more than a dozen British people and institutions on a terrorist list.
Iran accuses the institutions and the people of “supporting terrorism”. The sanctions include entry bans and assets must be frozen by the Iranian authorities within the scope of legal jurisdiction. The EU had previously imposed sanctions on Iranian security services. With the sanctions, the EU responded to the violent crackdown on protests in the country. In addition, sanctions were introduced because of Iran’s support for the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.
The trigger for the systemic mass protests in Iran was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini. The vice squad arrested her for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code. The woman died on September 16 in police custody. Since her death, thousands across the country have demonstrated against the government’s repressive course and Islamic rule system.
