The recording of the secret conversation lasts 40 minutes. You hear high-ranking members of the German Bundeswehr exchange sensitive information. The recording was published by the Russian propaganda medium Russia Today. The medium’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan (43), said on Friday that she had received these recordings from Russian security officials.
This concerns, among other things, the theoretical possibilities of the use of German Taurus cruise missiles in Ukraine. One of the generals says that Germany can supply Ukraine with a maximum of 50 to 100 missiles. “Then it’s the end of the field – and the war won’t change that,” you hear on the recording.
The leaked recording also addresses whether Taurus missiles would theoretically be able to destroy the bridge to the annexed Crimean Peninsula. It will also be discussed whether Ukraine could carry out the shelling without the help of the German Bundeswehr.
And this is where things get tricky for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65): he rejects a possible delivery of Taurus to Ukraine on the grounds that German soldiers are needed in Ukraine to fire the cruise missiles. In the recording, the generals assume that the Ukrainian soldiers can do this on their own.
The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded an explanation from the federal government after the reportedly intercepted conversation between senior Bundeswehr officials. “Attempts to avoid answers will be seen as an admission of guilt,” Moscow Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, 48, wrote on her Telegram channel.
According to information from the German magazine Spiegel, the recordings are authentic. According to Spiegel, an initial analysis of the tape shows that the Luftwaffe officers were quite careless during the meeting. The virtual meeting did not take place over a secure line, but via the Webex platform, which was relatively easy to listen to. In addition, at least one of the meeting participants was in Singapore and likely participated via his mobile phone.
The secret service of the Bundeswehr (MAD) is investigating under high pressure and the Ministry of Defense is warned. In the worst case, the process can escalate significantly. Because many meetings in the Bundeswehr take place via Webex, the Bundeswehr must fear that the Russian authorities could have tapped further internal information. (chs)
