Venezuelan President, Nicolas Madurocommitted this Friday to the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvato call elections in Venezuela in the second half of the year.
Maduro made this comment about the elections during the bilateral meeting of both leaders in Kingstown this Friday, on the sidelines Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac)the Brazilian presidency reported.
He has not yet determined the date of the election National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, although the Government and the opposition have committed to maintaining them in the second half of 2024.
In the meeting between Lula and Maduro, as announced by the Brazilian presidency, the leaders also discussed the million dollar debt that Venezuela has with Brazil, as well as the intensification of trade between the two countries.
After leaving the meeting, Maduro told Brazilian television station Globonews that the meeting was “very good” and focused on economic issues.
“Strengthen (cooperation), meet (with) business people, advance investments,” Maduro said, speaking in shaky Portuguese.
On the sidelines, Maduro and Lula discussed the joint fight against illegal miners in the indigenous Yanomami area, who live on both sides of the border, according to the Brazilian presidency.
The meeting between Lula and Maduro takes place a day after the official trip of the Brazilian leader to Guyanaa country that maintains diplomatic tensions with Venezuela over the Essequibo region.
In Guyana, Lula reiterated his desire to maintain Latin America as a region of peace.
