Niclas Matthei photographs parking offenders and then reports them to public order via an app.

In a luminous uniform and armed with a mobile phone, 18-year-old Niclas Matthei hunts down parking offenders in Saxony-Anhalt. Spiegel TV has dedicated a report to the man and shows how the ‘advertising master’, as he calls himself, works.

The deputy’s strongest weapon: he knows the traffic rules inside and out. One look from him is enough to determine a violation and know the amount of the fine. He speaks fluent German: “The vehicle is parked in the pedestrian area and is therefore hindering other road users.”

Written more than 4000 advertisements

When he sees a parking violator, he takes a photo of the car and uploads it to an illegal parking app. He is also not above lecturing people. He says dryly to a man who starts to explain: ‘You could have parked on the church square.’

According to his own statements, he wrote more than 4,000 advertisements last year. He proudly says into the camera: “The national total amount of fines and warnings collected from my advertisements is 140,995 euros, according to the fine catalog.”

The journalist from Spiegel TV accompanying him tells him that he is an informant. Matthei answers: “An informant is just someone who shits on everyone. You can also see it this way from that perspective. Well, that wouldn’t be bad now.”

He introduces himself as “advertising master Matthei”.

He calmly tolerates insults or angry comments from drivers, some of whom do not even notice, or only after a while, that they have been betrayed by a private individual. The police are called several times and the young man confidently introduces himself as ‘advertising master Matthei’.

Despite inquiries, his motivation for this time-consuming hobby is not entirely clear. He says: “To enforce the traffic rules because people think they can park however they want. But then people like me come along.” And what he does ultimately benefits the public. Matthei says: “It’s just against the law. With those fifteen euros you might be able to buy two new light bulbs at the town hall.”

The success of the report shows that the man touched a nerve: the report has now been viewed more than 1.2 million times on YouTube. (neo)
