Germany’s most wanted woman has been arrested. Former Red Army Faction (RAF) terrorist Daniela Klette was arrested on Tuesday. The arrest of the 65-year-old could provide important information about RAF crimes that remain unsolved. In the meantime, more and more details about the unmasking of the 65-year-old are coming to light. What you need to know about the Burdock case.
According to the criminal investigation department of the state of Lower Saxony, the researchers received the decisive tip from the population in November 2023. One thing is clear: the tip led to Berlin-Kreuzberg, to a woman calling herself Claudia Ivone.
According to the criminal investigation department of the state of Lower Saxony, Klette lived for decades under a false identity in her apartment in Berlin. Apparently Klette was active in a Brazilian cultural association in Berlin where Capoeira was danced.
In addition to investigating clubs and the autonomous scene in Berlin, investigators also put pressure on the relatives of those wanted, Focus Online reports. For this purpose, letters and computers were evaluated. Authorities are also said to have tried to capture Klette and her two accomplices, Ernst-Volker Staub (69) and Burkhard Garweg (55), among suspected RAF supporters.
A few months ago, the podcast ‘Legion’ from production company Undone and ARD almost found Klette, according to research by Spiegel. The ARD reporters already suspected that the woman from the cultural association was Klette.
The journalist Khesrau Behroz writes further. Now we know: we were right.”
The Public Prosecution Service in Verden (Lower Saxony) has accused Klette of several robberies and attempted murders, which she allegedly committed together with her accomplices Staub and Garweg.
Klette is also believed to have been involved in a failed bomb attack on Deutsche Bank in 1990. The following year she was said to have been part of an RAF commando that fired shots at the US embassy in Bonn. And in 1993 she allegedly blew up a new prison building in Hesse together with Staub and Garweg.
The last act of the RAF pensioners probably took place in 2015: a trio tried to rob a cash transport truck in front of a supermarket in Lower Saxony. Because weapons were involved, it is considered attempted murder. The main suspects: burdock, dust and cooking waste.
An intensive search is underway for 69-year-old Staub and 55-year-old Garweg. The trio are said to have belonged to the third generation of RAF terrorists. This generation is said to have murdered, among others, the then head of Deutsche Bank, Alfred Herrhausen, and the head of Treuhand, Detlev Karsten Rohwedder. The perpetrator and motive remain unclear to this day.
Klette’s arrest could significantly help piece together the trio’s lives. The investigators probably hope that, with Klette as a key witness, they will also catch Garweg and Staub.
According to investigators, the 65-year-old has not denied her identity. They also say she almost seemed a little relieved. According to research by “Spiegel” she said “at some point it will be over”.
Klette is said to have not yet responded to specific allegations. According to their own statements, the officers found two magazines for a pistol and ammunition in their rented apartment in Berlin. It is still unclear why Klette had the items in the apartment and where they came from.
Daniela Klette was served with six arrest warrants for various robberies. Klette faces a prison sentence of fifteen years for the robberies. The same applies to the crime of attempted murder. This does not expire. Robberies, on the other hand, can no longer be punished twenty years after the crime.
The sentence could be even higher if it can be proven that Klette was involved in the RAF’s terrorist acts. If this happens, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office will be called in.
According to the “Hannoversche Allgemeine”, investigators arrested another person on Wednesday. It becomes clear whether this is one of Klette’s former accomplices. A second person was arrested on Tuesday but was released on Wednesday.
