The image with which the organizer advertised the “Willy’s Chocolate Experience”, as in the musical fairy tale “Wonka”, was extremely inviting: candy canes, chocolate fountains, huge enchanted mushrooms – a wonderful world created for bright children’s eyes.
However, reality brought tears to tears: at a warehouse in the Glasgow suburb of Whiteinch, expectant parents and their children were greeted by a grey, drab warehouse with some seemingly makeshift elements. A bouncy castle, a crooked background on the wall, some plastic props.
The ‘party’, for which parents had to pay about 40 francs per person, could be completed within two minutes. Shocked visitors took photos and shared them on social media. One says: “Everyone gathered around one person at the counter to complain. Children were crying.”
Ultimately, the organizer pulled the emergency brake: “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” was canceled after a few hours. The police were even there, called by parents demanding their money back. The disaster was not over yet: the organizers did not inform about the closure, so that countless visitors later found themselves in front of the closed gates.
A photo of a worker with a desolate look has been shared hundreds of times, symbolic of the atmosphere that prevailed during the festival. An actress hired for the festival said she was given a script the day before, bad costumes and told to just improvise.
“It was embarrassing, to be completely honest. We actors did our best to make it work, but we were only given twelve hours to learn our script and they told us to just improvise. It’s not easy to improvise an entire show,” she said.
The organizer “House of Illuminati” apologized to the customers. They were let down by others and probably should have canceled the event immediately. The visitors would get their money back.
Another employee said his heart sank when he saw the warehouse. “We were told to give the kids a few gummy bears and a quarter cup of lemonade at the end.” (neo)
