Breast cancer discovered during pregnancy: woman gives birth to a healthy child despite chemotherapy

Now she has healthy children, long brown hair and she can look to the future with hope again: five years ago this was unthinkable for Ewelina Bober (32). She was seven months pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The mother of two children from Germany tells ‘Focus’ her inspiring story.

She noticed the thickened area in her right breast in February 2013, when she was three months pregnant. But neither the gynecologist nor the X-rays and ultrasounds gave cause for concern. It’s just pregnancy-related changes and hormones.

It was only five months later, in July, that the tumor became visible on the images: it was already about 15 centimeters long – the specialists at the Red Cross Hospital in Munich saw no other option than to amputate the affected breast.

Bober has the BRCA-2 gene, which increases the chance of cancer recurrence by 65 percent. She then had both breasts removed. Now Bober can joke, “Can’t I share her fortune with Angelina Jolie instead of a cancer gene?”

The lymph nodes were also affected

But the cancer had also affected her lymph nodes; Bober’s doctors told her she had “less than five weeks” and that chemotherapy should begin immediately. The expectant mother was worried about her baby: “I couldn’t believe it. You should not even take aspirin during pregnancy. And then chemo!?” Oncologists reassured the mother: “I could only believe the specialist at the time that it was better protected in the womb than if the baby had been taken away very early.”

This is how the initially unimaginable thing began: while she was heavily pregnant, she was given IVs with chemicals that were supposed to destroy the cancer cells in her body. However, her son Luis was born healthy on September 13, a true medical miracle.

“Mommy is healthy again”

After birth, Bober had to undergo twelve cycles of chemotherapy and radiation. The cancer is now considered defeated. Bober only needs to take one tablet per day. Her eldest son, Leon, was also relieved. He allegedly said to her: “You have hair again, you are healthy now.” She would like to donate her now long head of hair: “The next time I visit my home country, I will donate the braid. In Poland they make wigs from it for children with cancer.”

Now the kindergarten teacher wants to look ahead again: “From now on I dare to make plans for the future again.” For example, she wants to save money for a trip to the US. (Unpleasant)
