Norway’s King Harald V, who is in poor health, has been hospitalized again while on holiday in Malaysia. The 87-year-old is being hospitalized due to an infection “by both the Malaysian and Norwegian medical staff,” the Norwegian royal family announced in Oslo on Tuesday.
Harald V turned 87 on February 21, making him the longest-serving monarch in Europe. The Norwegian head of state uses crutches and has repeatedly struggled with health problems in recent years. He underwent heart surgery and suffered from repeated respiratory infections.
The Norwegian royal family recently announced at the end of January that the king was on sick leave for several days due to a respiratory infection and would be represented during this time by his son, 50-year-old Crown Prince Haakon.
However, Harald V, who has been king of Norway for 33 years, dismissed speculation about an abdication in January. “I stand by what I have always said, that I swore an oath to the Storting (the Norwegian parliament) and that it is for life,” he said in Oslo. The reason for the clarification was the abdication in January of his distant cousin, the 83-year-old Danish Queen Margrethe II.
