Argentina’s President Milei bans gender-sensitive language ‘Victory on all fronts’: Study shows how biased the Russian Red Cross is

The new government of ultra-liberal Argentine President Javier Milei has banned the use of gender-sensitive language in all federal agencies.

“No special characters should be used and the unnecessary use of the feminine form in documents should be avoided,” government spokesman Manuel Adorni said on Tuesday. The instruction already applied to the armed forces of the South American country and has now been extended to all federal authorities. Gendering is about a putatively gender-conscious use of language intended to express equal treatment of all genders and identities.

While Milei takes ultra-liberal positions on economic issues, he is decidedly conservative in other areas. He rejects, among other things, the right to abortion. He also recently closed the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism.

“We are making progress in dissolving authorities that are useless,” government spokesman Adorni said last week. Unlike other countries in Latin America, Argentina has a strong women’s rights movement. Left-wing politicians and activists in particular regularly use gender-sensitive language. (dabbing/sda/dpa)
