Italians kidnapped in Mali after being free for more than a year and a half. Rhino poaching in South Africa has increased noticeably

More than a year and a half after being kidnapped in the West African crisis state of Mali, three Italians are free again.

The couple and their son were released on Tuesday evening, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office announced. The family was kidnapped in the town of Koutiala in May 2022 by a jihadist group believed to be linked to the Al Qaeda terror network.

The family had lived for several years in Koutiala, southeast of the Malian capital Bamako. At the time, they lived in a community of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the statement said. The Italian foreign secret service Aise and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were involved in the release. The release could be negotiated through more intensive contact with tribal leaders and local secret services. Despite the long captivity, the three were in good health and should be brought to Rome on Tuesday, it was said. (saw/sda/dpa)
