Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel will resign on March 8. This is evident from announcements from the Republican National Committee (RNC) published on Monday. Co-chairman Drew McKissick is also relinquishing his position. Both resignations were expected. The RNC must now call new elections.
Former US President Donald Trump had previously nominated his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, for co-chairmanship. The 41-year-old was previously seen as a political commentator for, among others, the right-wing American broadcaster Fox News.
For the presidency, Trump appointed his close ally Michael Whatley, the head of the Republicans in the US state of North Carolina. He supported Trump, among other things, by claiming that his victory in the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him through massive fraud. Trump’s suggestions are likely to carry weight as he is far ahead of rival Nikki Haley in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
The RNC organizes, among other things, the nominating party conference, where delegates formally choose the Republican presidential candidate after the primaries. McDaniel has served as chairman of the RNC since 2017. She is the niece of Senator Mitt Romney, who lost as a Republican candidate in the 2012 presidential elections to then-incumbent President Barack Obama. (dabbing/sda/dpa)
