One of the most exclusive cruise ships: The World.

Residents of The World live every cruise enthusiast’s dream. Instead of bookable rooms, the luxury ship offers condominiums. Anyone who has a net worth of at least ten million dollars and acquires one of the 165 apartments can enjoy exclusive life on board all year round. The luxury ship has largely remained a secret from everyone else.

But now former resident Peter Antonucci is unpacking. He tells CNN about his five years on board The World. He emphasizes, “There are a lot of rich people doing playful things, sometimes indecent things, sometimes scandalous things.”

Residents choose who comes with them

The retired lawyer owned a total of four apartments on the luxury steamship between 2014 and 2019. He got his first apartment for $1.6 million, the last one cost him about $4 million. To be part of the World Community you not only need the necessary change, but also vitamin B. Because: only those suggested or supported by the current residents can move in.

Antonucci was able to get started thanks to an introductory trip, after which the residents welcomed him and his wife into their exclusive circle. “Many people come on board and already know the residents. But others took a test drive and met people who ultimately sponsored them,” Antonucci explains.

Complete flexibility

After you have successfully purchased an apartment, residents can renovate it according to their own wishes. “Some have modern furniture and really cool appliances, others haven’t been touched in 20 years,” says Antonucci. There is also a spa, tennis court and gym on the ship.

For most residents, the ship is not a permanent residence, but rather a kind of holiday home. Antonucci also traveled repeatedly to his hometown of New York. “You can set out yourself and then catch up with the ship – wherever it is.”

Residents also have a say in where the ship sails. The route is planned approximately two years in advance, taking into account fuel, crew changes, airport connections, visa requirements and special events at various locations around the world.

Residents can then vote on three possible routes. It was not unusual for problems to arise. “Everyone is quite rich and thinks their opinion is the smartest,” Antonucci emphasizes. Some residents were ‘not used to something being forbidden to them’.

Business, alcohol, drama

Despite the heated discussions, most residents were on board mainly because of the company. “There’s a lot of drinking, a lot of partying. And that’s the fun of it,” says Antonucci. The community was therefore “very social”. “A byproduct of the thriving social life on board was that things were happening everywhere,” Antonucci explains.

The ex-passenger emphasizes: “Things happen. Part of it is people getting drunk, singing songs and just having fun. And that is relatively harmless. And some things are harmless. But there are also married people who don’t always sleep with their partner.”

In 2019, Antonucci finally decided to turn his back on life on the high seas. But he never regretted his time on the ship. “These are all very special memories. At one point I just saw everything I wanted to see.” (Ms.)
