Shocking case in the American state of Texas: Catherine H.* (39) accidentally discovers how her husband Mason H.* wants to poison her. But his real target is not her, but her unborn child, as the American newspaper ‘The Daily Beast’ writes. He mixes abortion drugs into various drinks, which he then gives her to drink. The punishment against the husband is lenient, just 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation – in a state that has the strictest abortion laws in the US.
Actually, Catherine’s family life seems perfect. Two children and a husband she has known since college. But in February 2022 there was a shock: Mason wanted a divorce from his wife, who was pregnant again. Shortly afterwards he brings her breakfast in bed, a glass of water with cloudy contents. She finishes the glass – and has to go to the emergency room with explosive stomach pain and bleeding. She first suspects that her husband wanted to poison her.
After her stay in the hospital, she starts looking for clues herself, no longer accepts drinks and calls in private detective John Moritz. Thanks to hidden surveillance cameras, she has it in black and white: the footage shows her husband pouring a white powder into her glass. She also finds packets of Cyrux, an abortion drug, in the trash.
She goes to the Houston police, convinced they would help her. Texas has the strictest abortion laws in the United States and abortion is punishable by up to life in prison. But it took authorities a whole month to arrest her husband. Her daughter was born three months after the arrest in August 2023, ten weeks premature. “Every day is a fight for her. This still affects us every day,” Catherine told the newspaper.
The Public Prosecution Service will contact her at the end of 2023. She has to make a deal with her husband, which she accepts after a long struggle on February 7, 2024. Mason H. pleads guilty to injury to a child under the age of 15, serves 180 days in jail, is placed on probation for ten years and is prohibited from having contact with his wife and child. Catherine has strong doubts about the verdict and the American state: “I don’t think 180 days are justified if you try to kill your child seven times,” she told the AP news agency.
Texas is known for its crackdown on women and people who assist with abortions. In another case, a 31-year-old woman’s request to have an abortion because of her high-risk pregnancy was denied. Instead, she was deported from the state. “It is very clear that the state of Texas is treating men and women differently in this situation.” (mgf)
