A woman was attacked by a tiger shark off a small island off the west coast of Australia. The approximately 40-year-old victim was only in waist-deep water off Sandland Island north of the coastal town of Jurien Bay when the approximately two-meter-long predatory fish attacked, news agency AAP reported on Monday, citing authorities. According to Australian media, the woman suffered serious injuries to her legs and had to undergo emergency surgery.
The rescuers first brought them back to the mainland by boat. From there she was flown by helicopter to the city of Perth. Several beaches in the region were initially closed.
Sandland Island is only about 300 meters offshore and is approximately two hectares in size. According to the news site WAToday, sea lions live in the sea off the island and many travel agencies offer trips there. (SDA)
