A young US Air Force soldier set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington.

Apparently in protest against the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, a member of the US Air Force set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington.

The blond, younger man filmed himself and a selfie video shows him walking to the embassy. There he places the mobile phone on the floor with the camera pointed at himself. He pours liquid on himself and sets himself on fire. Within seconds the fire flares up and screams can be heard.

According to the New York Times, the man streamed the video live on the online platform Twitch.

Life-threatening burns

The US capital’s fire department said on Sunday that Secret Service security agents had extinguished the flames. The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities have launched an investigation, police said.

The US Air Force confirmed to the AFP news agency that the man was a member of the air force. No further information about his identity was provided.

Doused herself with liquid

The ‘New York Times’ and the news channel CNN, citing a video of the incident, reported that the man initially said he no longer wanted to be ‘complicit in a genocide’. After setting himself on fire, he shouted “Free Palestine” several times.

According to authorities, the incident took place around 1:00 PM local time on Sunday. The Israeli embassy said none of its staff were injured.

Israel calls for the destruction of Hamas

The Gaza war began on October 7 with the unprecedented major attack on Israel by the Islamist-Palestinian organization Hamas. According to Israeli information, about 1,160 people were killed and about 250 hostages were taken to the Gaza Strip.

In response to the Hamas attack, Israel has since taken massive military action in the Gaza Strip, with the stated aim of destroying Hamas. More than 29,690 people have been killed on Palestinian territory since then, according to Hamas figures, which cannot be independently verified. (kes/AFP)
