Swiss woman injured in road accident in Tanzania

At least 25 people have been killed in a serious traffic accident in Tanzania. Another 21 people were injured on Saturday, authorities in the East African country said. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) in Bern, a Swiss woman is also among the injured.

The accident in the northern region of Arusha is believed to have been caused when a truck failed to brake and collided with two buses and a car in front. Initially, a search was conducted for the driver of the truck. Legal action should be taken against him.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered that all injured people be treated free of charge, Tanzanian Health Minister Godwin Mollel said on Sunday.

Road safety is a problem in Tanzania, as in many other African countries. According to authorities, the country of about 67 million inhabitants had 1,550 road deaths last year. (sda/dpa)
