Pope Francis advocates for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine

He pope Francis He asked this Sunday during the Angelus that “a little humanity should be found to create the conditions for a diplomatic solution to seek peace in Ukraine“, recalling the second anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion.

So many victims, injuries, destruction, anguish, tears, in a period that is terribly prolonged and whose end is not yet in sight,” said the Pope, leaning through the window of the papal palace.

Francis also stated that this war “is not only ravaging this region Europebut it set off a global wave of fear and hatred.

He also wanted to express, as in every public occasion, his closeness to the martyred Ukrainian people and his prayers for everyone, especially for the many innocent victims.

“He begged to find that bit of humanity that would create the conditions for a diplomatic solution in the search for a just and lasting peace,” was the pope’s appeal.

He believed that these dialogues should be conducted “on principles The Charter of the United Nations and international law“and that Peru is “closely monitoring initiatives that promote the end of the conflict between both countries and progress in humanitarian issues.”

“From the beginning of the conflict, Peru joined the international rejection and condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which violates its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as it was established from its birth as an independent state,” he pointed out.

He added that the Andean country “believes that United Nations “It is an ideal and natural forum towards which to direct diplomatic efforts that contribute to the solution of this conflict.”

The Ministry claimed that “in accordance with this principled position and its pacifist call”, when one year passed since the beginning of the war, in 2023, Peru co-sponsored and voted for the UN General Assembly resolution “The Principles of the United Nations Charter supporting the comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine”.
