“Smash” received 43 percent of the vote in an online voting process among young people. Langenscheidt-Verlag announced this on Tuesday. Every year, the publishing house has already determined the top 10 terms by young people who voted for it, until finally the top 3 and the winner’s result.

According to Langenscheidt, the choice has been entirely in the hands of young people since 2020. A publishing committee only ensures that the terms do not contain any discriminatory or sexist reference.

The term comes from the smartphone game “Smash or Pass”, in which users are presented with a celebrity and can rate their attractiveness by swiping left or right on the screen. According to Langenscheidt, “smash” can mean “do something with someone”, “drag someone”, or even “have sex” in colloquial English, in addition to the actual translation as “smash”. “Pass”, on the other hand, means something like “forgo”.

“Smash” is ahead of “bottomless” and “doers”

The term that came in second place is clearly German: «bottomless».

With a clear gap, “bottomless” in voting followed in second place with 33 percent. It is synonymous with bad or bad. The “doer” finished in third place.
