Artist Spencer Tunick is once again recruiting thousands of volunteers to take part in his massive — and now world-famous — nude photo shoots. This time the American artist is going to Sydney, Australia, to draw attention to the dangers of skin cancer with his photos.
The new shoot, which Tunick needs at least 2,000 volunteers for, takes place on a Sydney beach. The number 2000 is not for nothing: Tunick wants to use it to draw attention to the at least 2000 Australians who die of skin cancer every year.
The artist is collaborating with Skin Check Champions, a charity that offers free skin check-ups in clinics, and is organizing the shoot during Australia’s National Skin Cancer Week.
It’s not the first time Tunick has organized a mass nude photo shoot. The artist has already taken more than 100 photos around the world. Some of these photos:
In 2016, 3,200 volunteers from twenty different countries came to the northern English port of Hull to take part in the project Sea of Hull. Upon arrival in Hull, the contestants painted each other four shades of blue.
This can be seen in this video:
In a 2020 interview with CNN, Tunick explained why he chose naked people for the photo shoots. “My job is to bring naked people as close to an abstraction as possible.” He wants to remove the stigma of nudity and encourage people to “respect the human body as an art form, like a painting or a sculpture”.
