Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley does not want to give up the race for her party’s nomination. She was “far away” from that, the former governor of South Carolina said during a speech in her home state on Tuesday. “Getting out would be the easy way. I never took the easy way out. In every race I’ve ever won, I’ve been the underdog.”

The next Republican primaries in South Carolina will take place on Saturday. So far, voting has taken place in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada; former US President Donald Trump won by wide margins in all these states.

For “the political elite, the party bosses, the cheerleaders in the world of commentators,” the Iowa race was apparently already over, Haley said, emphasizing: “Only three states voted, three.” She will “fight until the American people close their doors. That day isn’t today, and it won’t be on Saturday, not by a long shot. The presidential primaries have just begun.”

Many of the Republicans who openly supported Trump were secretly afraid of him, Haley said. They knew what a disaster he was for the party, but didn’t say it out loud. “I’m not afraid to tell the hard truth. I don’t feel the need to kiss the ring.” (sda/dpa)
