New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced the first appointments to his cabinet. A few well-known names have been given a key position.
For example, Truss-appointed Jeremy Hunt will retain his post as Treasury Secretary. Hunt was the deputy for Kwasi Kwarteng, who was fired by Truss to quell the turmoil in the financial markets because of her mini-budget.
Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace also remains in his post. It was considered that he was leaving because he did not want budget cuts in his department. It is not known whether Sunak has given him a promise in this regard.
It is also worth noting that Suella Braverman will once again become Secretary of the Interior. She resigned almost a week ago because she said she had sent a confidential email from her personal account. She then said that she made a mistake and that she was taking her responsibility by stepping down.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will also remain and Dominic Raab will return as Justice Secretary, a position he previously held in Boris Johnson’s cabinet.
British media write that the appointments are a sign that Sunak is trying to bring the entire Conservative Party into his cabinet. Wallace and Cleverly have been prominent supporters of Johnson, while Braverman represents the party’s Eurosceptic right wing. He would also have kept Hunt in his post so as not to cause further unrest on the financial markets.
