Germany’s 1990 World Cup hero Andreas Brehme is dead. Holes in the old socks and holes in the SCB defense

Andreas Brehme died at the age of 63. His partner Susanne Schaefer confirmed this to the German news agency on behalf of his family. Brehme became a hero when he converted a penalty in the 85th minute of the 1990 World Cup final in Rome. Germany won this 1-0 against Argentina. The former professional footballer died of cardiac arrest in Munich on Tuesday evening.

The Hamburg native started his professional career at 1. FC Saarbrücken, but moved to Bundesliga club Kaiserslautern after just one year. There the left back, who could also play in defensive midfield, became a legend. Andi Brehme played a total of 319 games for the Lauterers between 1981 and 1986 and from 1993 to the end of his career in 1998, with whom he won the DFB Cup in 1995/96 and the championship in his last season as a promoted team.

In between, he played two seasons for Bayern Munich, four years at Inter Milan and one year at Real Zaragoza. He also became champion once with FC Bayern and the Italians. He also won the UEFA Cup with Inter Milan in the 1990/91 season. He also played 86 international matches for the German national team, scoring another seven goals in addition to the penalty in the World Cup victory.
