The resolution tabled by Algeria includes a demand for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and is expected to be put to the vote at 5:30 PM CET. Amid concerns about a major Israeli army offensive on the southern coastal city of Rafah, this is increasing pressure on Israel’s ally the US. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield had said the United States would again use its veto power in the Security Council if a vote were to take place. The US is – according to its own statements – trying to prevent a vote, so as not to jeopardize important negotiations between Israel and the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas.
Washington is also concerned about not being seen as a pioneer in Israel’s increasingly criticized warfare, observers say. (SDA)
