A new incident has occurred involving a cargo ship in the Red Sea. The Liberian-flagged cargo ship ‘Master’ reported an explosion in the immediate area, the British naval authority UKMTO reported late on Sunday evening. The ship was damaged. However, all crew members were reported to be safe. The incident took place 35 nautical miles off Al Mukha on the coast of Yemen, the report said.

Yemen’s militant Islamist Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships on the key sea route through the Suez Canal in recent times. The militia wants to put an end to Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip by shelling merchant ships, which followed the unprecedented massacre by the Islamist Hamas in Israel on October 7.

The foreign ministers of the EU countries want to decide this Monday in Brussels on the start of the new military operation to safeguard merchant shipping in the region. The plan for Operation Aspides calls for sending European warships to the Red Sea and adjacent sea areas to protect merchant ships from such attacks.

Germany wants to participate in the operation with the frigate “Hesse”. The warship with approximately 240 soldiers on board was sent from Wilhelmshaven to the Mediterranean Sea on February 8. It was last in a port on the Greek island of Crete. (sda/dpa)
