Ethiopian peace talks begin in South Africa

For the first time since war broke out in Ethiopia, the warring parties have come together to negotiate an end to the conflict. In the coming days, representatives of the Ethiopian government and the Tigray region will discuss peace in the South African city of Pretoria. The talks are being conducted by the African Union.

Two years ago, war broke out in northern Ethiopia. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was the country’s most powerful party for many years, but lost that position in 2018 with the election of Abiy Ahmed as prime minister. Tensions erupted between these parties two years ago and civil war broke out.

The conflict has claimed the lives of many thousands of people and displaced millions of people. There was a ceasefire earlier this year that lasted five months before fighting broke out again in August.

In the past week, soldiers from the Ethiopian army, supported by troops from neighboring Eritrea, have taken several towns in Tigray.
