British demand consequences after Navalny’s death The British demand consequences after Navalny’s death

Britain has promised consequences over the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny and has summoned a representative of the Russian embassy. “There must be consequences when such appalling human rights abuses occur,” Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on Saturday, according to Sky News. It is examined whether there are individual persons responsible and whether individual measures can be taken. “We don’t announce them in advance, so I can’t say more.”

Of course they had already summoned the ambassador. “We have made clear our view on this terrible event and the way this person was treated,” Cameron said on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. In Munich he will also meet colleagues from the G7 countries.

The Foreign Office in London announced on Friday evening that Navalny’s death must be fully and transparently investigated. The ministry “has called on the Russian embassy to make it clear that we hold the Russian authorities fully responsible.” According to the PA news agency, officials were told the ambassador was ill and a representative was sent.

The British ministry praised Navalny as a man of great courage and iron will, who continued to fight for the rights of the Russian people even from prison. His commitment to human rights and solving corruption is an inspiration to millions of people. “The ideals for which he stood and died will live on forever.” (sda/dpa)
