Letters containing a poisonous powder have been received in at least three government and judicial buildings in Brussels. All people who came into contact with the powder were “isolated and investigated.” According to the prosecutor’s office, no one was injured.
As the Public Prosecution Service announced on Friday, the letters were discovered on Thursday at Belgian State Security, the Ministry of Justice and in a courthouse.
The white powder from the letters was also examined. According to prosecutors, it contained the toxic substance brucine, similar to the even more toxic strychnine. According to the Belgian public prosecutor’s office, brucine is only dangerous if it is swallowed. There is no danger if it comes into contact with the skin.
The Brussels police have started an investigation to identify the sender of the letters. According to their own statements, investigators assume there is no link to armed clashes in the drug community that kept the Belgian capital in suspense this week. (saw/sda/afp)
