The world reacted with surprise to the decision of Putin critic Alexei Navalny (†47) to return to Russia in January 2021. There he was threatened at best with long-term captivity in a camp, but even more likely with certain death.

In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned with a Soviet-era nerve agent. After regaining health in Germany, Navalny decided to return to his home country at the end of 2020.

Return to certain death?

Upon arrival in Moscow, the handcuffs clicked immediately. He violated probation conditions imposed upon him at his 2014 conviction.

Before his return, Navalny answered exactly this question in an interview with Christiane Amanpour (66) of CNN: why he returned to Russia – given the danger of death that threatens him.

“I have to go back”

“Why do you want to go back?” Amanpour asked. “And do you think you’ll be safe there when you go back?” Navalny responded that the assassination system of President Vladimir Putin (77), whom he hated, was not what it once was. After all, Putin had already failed to assassinate him in 2020.

This is what Navalny replied: «I have to go back because I don’t want these murderous gangs to exist in Russia. I don’t want Putin to rule Russia. I don’t want him to be president, I don’t want him to be Tsar of Russia. He kills people. He is the reason why our entire country has degenerated. He is the reason why people are so poor. There are 25 million people living below the poverty line and the entire system is in decline. Luckily for me, so does the murder system. I want to go back and try to change it.”

Now Navalny died in custody in a Siberian camp. The Kremlin claims he collapsed after a walk.
