“They will be vaccinated and released,” a spokesperson for the Paris prefecture said Tuesday evening. Their new home is the area around Bréau Castle, east of the French capital.
“You will not be hunted there,” the spokesperson assured. Nevertheless, an animal protection organization accused the prefecture of mistreating the animals. “Catching them means stress for the animals. Some of them will die during the process and during transport,” explains the Paris Animaux Zoopolis association. Six more catching dates are planned until the end of February, with a maximum of twelve rabbit catchers in action each time.
Where do you go with 300 animals?
The population of wild rabbits in the Hôtel des Invalides is estimated at around 300. The prefecture speaks of “overpopulation”. The wild rabbits not only damaged gardens, but also posed a health risk because dead animals attracted rats. Repairing the damage to the gardens and the sewerage system is estimated at just under 370,000 euros.
In two weeks, the number of rabbits in Paris will temporarily increase despite the rabbit hunt: they are among the most popular animals among young visitors at the agricultural fair that starts then.
