A light plane disappeared from the radar in Costa Rica on Friday evening. Also on board: German entrepreneur and McFit founder Rainer Schaller with his family. What we know about the incident.
The troops have expanded their search off the coast of Costa Rica. In consultation with the authorities of the neighboring country, aerial searches in Panamanian waters have also been carried out for wreckage, Costa Rican Coast Guard director Martín Arias said Monday.
Initially, however, no debris was found there either. The search with about 60 emergency services will continue for as long as necessary.
There were a total of six people on board the machine at the time of the Friday night accident: McFit founder Schaller, his partner, the two children, another German and the Swiss pilot.
The business jet Piaggio P.180 Avanti has taken off from Palenque in the Mexican state of Chiapas. Communications were lost as the plane approached Limón airport on the Caribbean coast by sea, the security ministry said. “The plane disappeared from radar about 40 kilometers from Limón airport,” said Fernando Naranjo, director of the civil aviation authority.
That is completely unclear at the moment. At no time did the pilot report difficulties in contacting the air traffic controllers. The plane had neither a flight recorder nor a device to record communications. That is what the company that operates the machine reports, Naranjo reported Monday to the Costa Rican television channel Teletica. Due to the small size of the aircraft, this was also not determined. It is now important to find the body of the machine to advance the investigation into the cause of the crash, Naranjo said.
Rainer Schaller was born in Bamberg, Bavaria, in 1969 and founded his first fitness studio in Würzburg in 1997. He trusted the discount principle in the fitness sector and created a huge studio chain with McFit. RSG Group also includes other fitness brands such as John Reed, Gold’s Gym and Cyberobics. But Schaller is also active in other areas: the group also includes modeling agencies and the artist management company Tigerpool, for example.
Yes, Schaller also made headlines as the rights holder related to the 2010 Loveparade disaster in Duisburg that killed 21 and injured more than 650. As head of the organizers company at the time, he was never investigated. In the subsequent criminal case against employees of the municipality of Duisburg and his company Lopavent, he acted as a witness. In 2020, due to presumably insufficient guilt, the proceedings were discontinued without a verdict. In court in the spring of 2018, Schaller expressed his condolences to the relatives of the victims.
