After the third volcanic eruption in Iceland within eight weeks, the earth in the area will probably slowly calm down again. On Friday, livestreams from the snow-covered volcanic region southwest of Reykjavik initially stopped showing glowing red lava fountains after dawn. However, steam continued to rise from several locations around the eruption site.
The number of earthquakes associated with the eruption on Thursday morning has also decreased significantly since the eruption began. Icelandic authorities had already recorded a decrease in volcanic activity on Thursday afternoon after lava bubbled from an estimated three-kilometre-long fissure in the earth in the morning.
The liquid rock flowed about four and a half kilometers west, this time covering several streets and a hot water pipe, leading to an interruption of the region’s hot water supply.
Emergency services worked all Friday night to restore supply via a new geothermal pipeline. Energy supplier HS Orka hoped to be able to supply hot water into the pipe during the day.
The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal pool popular with tourists in the immediate vicinity of the eruption site, remained closed Friday, according to its operators. An important road affected by the lava mass leading to the evacuated coastal town of Grindavík will also be impassable until further notice, Icelandic broadcaster RÚV said. (saw/sda/dpa)
