Motions of no confidence in the French government fail

There is no majority in the French parliament for two motions of no confidence in President Macron’s government. The opposition made the motions because next year’s budget will be passed without a vote in Parliament.

Both the left-wing party LFI and the right-wing party RN from Marine le Pen submitted a vote of no confidence last week. The left-wing motion failed to win a majority on Monday night despite RN’s support. The right movement was not supported by the left and did not go through. Macron’s government survived the votes.

“cooperation impossible”

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne relies on the constitution to pass the budget without a vote in parliament. In exceptional cases, it offers the opportunity to do so.

In her opinion, cooperation with the opposition was impossible: she had already announced that she would vote against the budget anyway. The Prime Minister previously said the opposition had tabled thousands of amendments, which would take too long to deal with the budget.
