The happiness of Jessica R.* and Treveon T.* from the US state of Georgia seemed perfect. The couple was expecting a child.
But the doctor made a fatal mistake during the delivery. The baby had not even been born yet, but had already lost its life. The doctor decapitated the newborn. The coroner found the child had a broken neck, Sky News reported. Blame it: Tracey J.*, the doctor in charge.
At first it seems like a normal birth. Jessica R. will give birth in July 2023. The couple will go to Southern Regional Medical Center. It goes to the delivery room. Jessica R. wants a natural birth. But the baby gets stuck.
Instead of immediately performing a caesarean section, doctor Tracey J. tried to deliver the child by force, according to the parents. The baby’s head and neck were particularly stressed. “No credible, no reasonably competent obstetrician should ever do this,” the couple’s attorney explained at a news conference.
A caesarean section would only have been performed after three hours. At that point, the child was apparently already dead and the fetal monitor no longer showed a heartbeat. During the operation, only the little one’s torso could be removed. The head was delivered vaginally, the lawyer continued.
The doctor and the hospital then allegedly tried to cover up the incident. Only the funeral home informed the parents that the child’s head had been separated from the body. The parents were shown the dead child, wrapped in a sheet.
The hospital supports the responsible doctor. The child’s injuries occurred after death. Severe shoulder dystocia occurred during birth, a complication that could cause the child to die. When it was clear to the doctor that the baby would not survive, she prioritized saving the mother. The head was separated from the child’s body. But only after it was dead. In return, the hospital accuses the parents of false accusations.
The police are now continuing the investigation, but do not want to go into details. The forensic medicine department announced last month that the next step would be to transfer the case to the Public Prosecution Service. Meanwhile, the parents have only one wish: “We just want justice for our son. They lied to us.” (mgf)
