Horror discovery in Lippetal-Herzfeld (D). Construction workers who officially had to demolish only one house came across human bones. 15 skeletons including skulls, probably older than 50 years. The construction site was closed and the Soest police are investigating. North Rhine-Westphalia police say the human remains will be taken to Dortmund for a preliminary examination.

Old cemetery dug up?

According to an initial assessment by police, no evidence of a crime was found, a police spokeswoman told German broadcaster WDR. Police assume the remains are at least 40 to 50 years old. But even more than 100 years is possible.

The reason for this assumption is the pilgrimage church of St. Ida, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the site. This church is located on one of the oldest church locations in Westphalia. In addition, local cemeteries were previously constructed, usually adjacent. The chance that the construction workers opened an old grave is very high. Various monument authorities are now also involved.

Not the first case

Bone finds at churches are not uncommon. This is also evident from a new discovery of human remains in Vienna at the end of January. Human remains were excavated during construction work on Argentinierstrasse.

City archeology immediately started the investigation. Shortly afterwards they were able to rule out that the bones were fresh. The excavations are still in full swing, reports the “Kurier”. (mgf)
